Walter Greenleaf PhD
Dr. Walter Greenleaf is recognized internationally
as a pioneer in the use of advanced computer technology in medical
applications. He is a research scientist trained in neuro- and bio-behavioral
sciences at Stanford University. His focus has been on the use of
simulation technology to improve physical medicine, neuro- and cognitive
rehabilitation. Dr. Greenleaf:
- Established Greenleaf Medical, a medical device
development company, in 1988; the company has developed numerous
diagnostic and analytic technologies for medicine, including a telerehabilitation
platform.
- Helped Sun Microsystems acquire the VPL patent
portfolio of fundamental patents covering 3D interaction over the
Internet in 1998. The portfolio covers not just basic 3D interaction,
but also sound, tactile feedback, and shared virtual environments;
Greenleaf Medical retains rights to the medical applications of
these patents.
- Worked as a scientific advisor and consultant to
the Public Health Service, the National Institutes of Health (NIH),
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Department
of Education.
- Has recieved funding as a principle investigator
for a Small Business Innovation (SBIR) research grant from the NIH.
- Edited a series of biomedical books for the Institute
of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
- Is a contributing editor to CyberPsychology and
Behavior.
- Serves on the scientific advisory committee for
the Interactive Media Institute and several other non-profit organizations.
- Was a finalist for Discover Magazine's annual
technology award, and has received numerous awards and commendations
from the IEEE, Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and other
professional associations.
- Is an invited judge for the International Medical
Design Excellence Awards for the Medical Device and Diagnostics
Industry Association.
- Organized a series of conferences on “VR Technology
and Persons with Disabilities,” presented by the University of California
Center for Disabilities, for which he serves as a founding board
member.
- Is an organizer for the yearly “Medicine Meets
VR” symposia conducted by the University Of California Irvine School
Of Medicine, the annual CyberTherapy conference conducted by the
Interactive Media Institute, and the International Congress on Medical
and Care Compunetics.
- Chaired the International Virtual Reality Conference
held in Australia and keynoted the Asian Rehabilitation Symposium
held in Singapore, the International Biomedical Conference held
in Hong Kong, and the 2003 RESNA conference.
- Has appeared on NextStep, The Phil Donahue Show,
Beyond 2000, and CNN.
