Tom Piantanida PhD
Dr. Tom Piantanida’s primary research focus has been
the training applications of virtual reality technology. Prior to
becoming a consultant at Greenleaf Medical, Dr. Piantanida was employed
for 18 years at SRI International where he establishing the Virtual
Perception Program to research sensory and perceptual requirements
of virtual-reality systems, and to develop biomedical, training, and
architectural applications of virtual reality. Dr. Piantanida holds
a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Texas, and he
conducted postdoctoral research sponsored by the National Institutes
of Health. Dr. Piantanida:
- Is an SRI Fellow, one of two awarded each year
to outstanding researchers, and he was awarded the Newcomb-Cleveland
Prize for the Most Significant Contribution to Science.
- Earned the Virtual Reality Industry Award for
the Best Application for his work on training simulations.
- Collaborated on a four-volume report for National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Air Force on
the feasibility of using virtual-environment technology in maintenance
training.
- Researched the perceptual issues associated with
a home virtual-reality system for a major producer of electronic
games.
- Has served as a consultant to governmental and
industrial agencies, including Science Applications International
Corporation and Clarity, and the Office of Naval Research.
- Has served on the Technical Advisory Board for
the Army Research Institute/Naval Training System Center Virtual
Environment Training and Technology Program.
- Has frequently been invited to speak at virtual-reality
and vision conferences.
- Has chaired several national and international
meetings on virtual reality and human visual perception.
